I just know there is a reclusive, artistic goddess living somewhere inside me .... these are my attempts to try and coax her out.

FOCUS!!

My mother once told me that if I would pick one thing and actually focus on it, I would be absolutely amazing at whatever that might be.  But I'm not a focuser.  Much like a tone-deaf person will never become a great singer, I will never have tunnel vision .. no matter how hard I try.  Sure ... I learn little tricks to help along the way, but my work table is always filled with many different projects in varying stages of completion.

Allow me to prove my point ... below are the projects currently on my work bench .. just waiting for me to complete them and update my etsy site!

These altered composition notebooks have been hanging around so long, I'll soon be able to list them as 'vintage' items!

These are a little more recent .. but quickly catching up!

My current medium of the moment is soldering and plaster ...

Altered tins with solder and resin .. the resin part  is still in process.

Keeping with the Soldering theme (I guess that could be considered 'focusing'), I recently took Terri Heniz's Soulful Adornment class.  Great class, which I would highly recommend.  These soldered, resin-filled charms are also in varying states of completion.  What's the delay you ask?  Well ... I want to be able to do all the resin at once.  Artist who use resin a lot make it seem so easy to whip up just a little at a time.  Why do I make it seem like such a big deal?

And of course .. I need some hand-beaded chains to go with those charms.  This is my very first attempt at beading.  It is quite fun!  At least one is completed!

And now back to soldering ... Here are some soldered microscope slide charms ..

A couple collaged matchbox shrines using little bits and pieces..

And some soldered matchbox shadowbox magnets with images and text ..

And while we're at it .. let's solder some charms to go with those hand-beaded chains we were making two projects ago!  I was just playing around with different things .. stone, glass blocks, glass marbles, hammered wire, etc.  The ideas just keep coming!  They're not all winners .. but we'll save those for another blog post.

I bought a new workbench for my garage.  Soldering and plaster are just too messy for the office/craft room.  This piece of Styrofoam packing was really wanting to be a shrine!  So I covered it in plasterwrap!  Not sure where I'm going just yet.  It'll speak to me at some point when it's ready for the next step.

We were recently at the Mission San Xavier in Tucson.  The plaster curtains on my shrine were inspired by the amazing plaster work at the mission.   The colors and craftsmanship are amazing!   But this is not a good place to buy Milagros for art purposes.  They are strictly rationed - only one to a customer - and can only be used for their intended purpose!  I have a feeling Milagro art is frowned upon here.  Kind of like wearing a rosary as a necklace.

Anyway .. back to my myriad of projects ...

Here are some plaster elements which may or may not be used on my shrine.

And lastly .. this is my most recent project.  They are going to be called Forgotten Relics.  They are soldered matchbox shrines.

The base is covered in plasterwrap and then the glass is soldered to protect the 'relic' inside.  I love the way the paint settles into all the nooks and crannies of the dried plasterwrap.

The insides, while distressed, are much better preserved than the outside.
Is 'grunge' a color?

I do need to focus on finishing something.  Right now, finishing this blog post will have to do.

Yellowstone!

Time Warp Disclosure:  I have not been a very good blogger this year.  I just logged on to add a new entry and found this draft from June of this year.  It stands the test of time and still deserves to be posted .. so here it is .. better late than never.

June 2013:  I'm on my way home from a wonderful trip to Yellowstone with my sisters.

This image was from the native American memorial at Little Bighorn.  It was a beautiful iron sculpture honoring the native Americans who lost their lives.  This was my favorite part of the sculpture.

I had never been to Yellowstone and it was incredibly beautiful.   Amazing colors and images
everywhere!

I took the opportunity to abandon a few soldered trinkets along the way as part of Michael deMeng's Art Abandonment Facebook Group.

When we abandon a piece of art, we include a card with information about the Art Abandonment group.  It includes an e-mail address where the person finding the piece can let us know that it was found.  I had never received a response regarding any of the pieces I abandoned previously ... most times you don't.  You just trust that the universe has placed it into the hands of the person who will appreciate it most.

That was about to change.  I abandoned the soldered charm below at the Yellowstone post office on Memorial Day.
.

I almost didn't abandon it because I thought the message was too personal to have any meaning to a random stranger.  I couldn't have been more wrong.  Below is the response I received:

"I found art in the old faithful post office today, went there to find it was closed, completely forgot it was memorial day, I'm not an American,  I'm from Mexico, lost in my thoughts about my late mother thinking of her if she remembers me i open your bag to find out a message: Trust me my heart will love you forever, my tears streamed down my face. Thanks for this artwork it has become now a special object for me."

The message brought a tear to my eye too.  I had no idea such a random act could touch someone so deeply.  I was honored to have been a part of that special moment and am so glad they shared it with me.

What an honor!

My piece, Desperado, has been selected as a winner in the Create Mixed Media Incite, Dreams Realized: The Best of Mixed Media competition!  The winners will have their work showcased in a book which will be available in September, 2013!  How exciting is that???

Art Abandonment

I have been abandoning some hearts and ornaments as part of Michael DeMeng's Art Abandonment group on Facebook.  The card provides an e-mail address where the finder can send a quick e-mail to let us know they found the abandoned art .. no responses yet. But hopefully I've made someone's day a little brighter.

As an extra treat .. I've been enclosing a lottery ticket with the ornaments .. maybe someone will strike it rich!  I've got a few more I plan to abandon before Christmas.

These winged hearts are made of wire, plasterwrap and topped with a sari silk ribbon bow.

Gift Pockets

I've been shifting a huge box of old denim jeans around for the past few years.  I just hated to throw it out because .. you know .. someday I'm gonna find a use for them!

Well .. "someday" finally came when I downloaded the free Cloth Paper Scissors e-book, 6 Easy Gifts to Make.  There was a tutorial by Melony Bradley for Gifting Pockets.  I was off and running!

This one, Blossom, is my favorite!  I used circles of denim for the flowers and the seams for the stems.   I added a ribbon trim, secured with some pink beads.  I finished it off with a twisted wire handle.

However, I did do this the hard way.  I re-read the instructions after completing a couple and realized that Melony actually cut off the back off the pocket before doing her sewing.  Then she added new fabric to the back to cover her stitching and recreate the pocket.  I'll be sure to try that next time.  It was a little tricky to stitch through the thick fabric while trying to squeeze my hand inside the pocket!

Follow your Heart

Another Winged Heart

I blatently copied this snowman idea from the sample in the ebook.

I've got plenty of denim left over!  NEXT ....
